  1. EXAMPLE:
    1) I am reading ZOMBIE HAIKU by Ryan Mecum. So far in my story, a man named Chris Lynch is describing a terrorizing experience in an airport. This scene reminds me of MacCarther Airport on Long Island. Chris describes being locked in a newstand with a woman named Barbara. They are hiding from some weird creatures/humans trying to attack them. I could picture the two characters living off the candy bars and other items of the newstand that Chris describes. I could picture the gates drawn down, protecting them, while the enemy is trying to attack.

    2. So far, my book has discussed the dead roaming around and being able to talk/write in a journal. In reality, the dead can't roam around the streets so this can not possibly be realistic fiction. I know that science fiction often provides us with mutation like creatures; perhaps these walking dead are such mutations.

  2. I am reading FEVER by Laurie Halse Anderson. So far in my story, a young girl name Matildais describing her life working in a coffee shop and losing her friend, named polly, to a sickly disease. This reminds me of when my mothers uncle lost his battle to cancer and every one is my family had to cope. Just like Matilda did when she lost her friend. I can really relate that Matilida is having a hard time with a death and it puts a strain on her familys relationship and bussiness.

    2. I know that this book is historical fiction because not only does it have the date on the front cover, but this takes place in Philidelphia, known as the capitol of the united states back then. I also know thisi is historical fiction because when a sickness throughout the town has spread, no one i s able to get vaccines because they were not invented.

  3. I am reading TOUCH WOOD by Renee Roth-Hano. The story is about the German occupation of France during World War 2. The book, told in the diary entries of a young Jewish girl, focuses on the discriminations and challenges her and her family experience during this time. In one entry, the young girl, Renee said that she loves geography because she can experience foriegn places, and "dream" about them. The passage says, "It allows me to dream about exotic, faraway places such as Mozambique or Madagascar, or cities like Tombouctou or Tegucigalpa: The more complicated the name, the more promising it seems to me." This reminds me of a video my teacher showed the class in elementry school, a song listing all the countries of the globe, with long and confusing names. I imagine Renee, the young girl, sitting in front of a globe learning the names of the faraway places, and visualizing what they are like.

I know this book is historical fiction because it takes place in the past, more specifically World War 2 when the Germans occupied some of France. Also, the characters are made, up, and not real people.

  4. 1) I am reading ASHES OF ROSES by Mary Jane Auch. So far in my story a girl named Rose has immigrated to America from Limerick, Ireland. Her brother, Joseph, has diagnosed with Trachea and was ordered to be sent back to Ireland. Rose's father went with her brother and it was only her mother and her sisters left to live in America. When in America, Rose's family goes to live with their Uncle Patricks; only to find Uncle Pattick's wife and three girls are snooby, little brats! This scene reminds of one of my old friends who was so rude to me and her other friend was good friends with me but, she was not and hated me because she was so jealous of me. Then when Rose's mom decieds to go back to Ireland, Rose protests and Rose's mom allows Rose and her younger sister Maureen to stay in America by themselves. Now Rose and Maureen must adjust and try to thrive in America by themselves.2) I know my book is historical fiction because the histroy of the immigrants coming to America is real history. The immigration to America actully happened. On the other hand the characters of the story may not be real they are just helping tell the story.

  5. 1) I am reading RADICAL RED BY James Duffy. So far my book has had a girl named Conner and she is a very well behaved child. I have infered this by Conner listens to the teacher and follows her Da's (dad) instructions. Conner ran into a women named Bertha and Bertha asked Conner to read this to her ma (mom) and Coner said "sorry I don't think my da would want me to". This reminds me of when I was 4. I always listened, other then when I was tired, then I just was cranky. It's important to the book because the main character is always obedient and that will probaly help later in the book. I have infered that Conner will end up being a idependant girl who fights for what she wants. I got this idea by the cover and the actions in the book like women voting.

2)As far as I have read my book is historical fiction because of the Catholic teacher tells the children to stay in line untill they reach the schoolhouse. Schoolhouses aren't really in use now days. Usually schoolhouses are from the 1800's early 1900's.

  6. 1) I am readin THE KITE RIDER by Geraldine McCaughrean. So far in my story, a boy named Haoyou and a widowed a mother. While being destracted by the circus he doesnt relize the wind test is about to begin he climbs up a hill to get a better look when he see's his father strapped to the kite!

    2. So far, my book includes talk of it being the 13th century and dwescribed the ancient chinese houses they have. Today the houses are built different and there are more job oppertunities then being a fisherman or sell items at the local market.

  7. i am reading the book CATCH A TIGER BY THE TOE by:Ellen Levine this book is about a girl named Elaine, a girl named Harriet Purdue, a girl named Myrna, a boy named slevie, and a boy named charlie. this dook reminded me of something i have done and felt the thing they did was go to the movies on a rainy day and they were very sad because it was raining. the same thing happend to me i went to the movies with my friends and it was rainy and it was kinda sad that it was rainy.
2.)so far my book has said dates that were in the past but it was present to them. the said they go and watch films not DVD's.

l.) I am reading WANTED: A GIRL FOR THE HORSES by: Betty Cavanna and in the story a girl named Charlotte gets to live with a stranger named "Lady Agnes" And Since she acted badly at school for write-ups and detentions, She has to be a groom and clean after the horses. But she had no expereince with horses whatsoever. So she manages to try her best so she can return home, With her mom in Devonshire. Then along the way she meets a horse named Cricket and she sneaks out at night to train him but she trys to avoid Lady Agnes before she loses her job and will never pay back the school for what she did. This Reminds me of The time I wanted to train Shawnee, And how Even though I Could get in trouble, It's Totally worth a while.

2.) So far, my book told how Charlotte can be Old-fashioned for example: In the book It has a part when she calls her "Lady Agnes" Which in our time we only call people we know by their first or last name. And It talks about the "Western Gazette" Which also doesn't come in mind in our point of time because our newspaper is called "Dover news" Which is way different than Western Gazette.

  9. Heather Busch:
1).I am reading the book NINE DAYS A QUEEN by Ann Rinaldi. Well this book has reminded me or made me think about how the one daughter always got slaped or hit or abused by her mom. This made a connection because my parents do Foster care and I see kids that get abused and stuff by their parents all the time so I thought about those kids and kinda compared them to her.

2). I know this book is historic fiction because it takes me back in time and talks about a girl and how she grew up. This book gives alot of dates and tells about different time periods.

1.)I am reading WEETAMOO HEART OF THE POCASSETS by Patricia Clark Smith. The main character is Weetamoo who is apart of the Wampanoag Nation. Her father is the leader and this reminds me of the movie POCAHONTAS. Weetamoo name means Sweet Heart which may bring harmony to her family and people. I know many people have to act a certain way to not show disrespect to the family.
2.) My book so far discusses on certain nations and a spirtual god named SQUANT that the main prays to. Aslo how children's chore's are to hunt, fish, and to grind the corn.

  11. 1) I am reading Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. So far, a boy named Huck is slightly troubled, and lives with a lady who gives him many rules, that he doesn't necessarily like. This reminds me of a teacher that worked in my school when I was in fourth grade. She was very strict, and many students didn't like her rules. They were in fact reasonable rules, but many children wanted the freedom to talk and goof off every now and then. For example in the story, Huck's guardian will not let him eat dinner until she says a prayer.
    2) I have seen that it is Historical Fiction because people in the story do not have much technology. For example, Huck and his friend Tom used a candle for light. The most likely haven't been introduced to flashlights yet, because they have not yet been invented in their era.

  12. 1. I am reading THE LEGEND OF BUDDY BUSH by Shelia P. Moses. So far in my book its saying that a girl named Pattie and her family is having her Uncle Buddy to come and live with them and it was just talking about what he looked like and that he had a blue suite and car. This reminded me of when my uncle comes from California and stays with my grandparents, and we have so much fun. (but Uncle Buddy doesn't remind me of my uncle.)

    2. A clue that showed me that my book was Historical fiction is it was talking about slaves and that the house that they lived in they said, that you would of never thought that rich white folks lived here. Also they said that when the white folks moved out the slaves moved in.

  13. 1. I am reading I WALK IN DREAD by Lisa Rowe Fraustino. So far its a jornal about a girl named Deliverance Trembley who found a journal under her uncles shelf and is secretly writing in it behind her uncles back because he is very strick. One time he beat her because he caught her reading while doing work. This reminds me of things i've done behing my parents back;but my parents wouldn't beat me, they'd just be mad and ground me. This shows how Deliverances uncle has a very serious personality. So from the beginning I knew that he was an intimidating character.

    2. You can tell this book is Historical Fiction because its based about a true event that happened in the 1691(the Salem Which Trials). The ladies wore bonnets and the men are expected to hunt. But you can tell its fiction because on the copyrite page it tells you that Deliverance is a fictional character.

  14. RESPONSE TO EMILY P.
Emily, I've actually read Huckleberry Fin and had the same sort of connection that you did. When I think of strict people, I often think of teachers I had in the past. The one teacher that comes to mind is actually my fourth grade teacher; must be something with that grade level. My fourth grade teacher would be mean to me every day by telling me I was stupid and saying I didn't try hard enough. She made me sit by all boys when all the other girls got to sit next to one another.

  15. Megan I totally agree with you, when you said that your family had to cope with the loss, because when my brother died, my family had to cope with the loss too. The way you explain what was going on in the book and your life was very specific to get your point across.

  16. 1) So far in the passage it reminde's me of my friend's because josephine moved because her and her family had to move and because she got into a fight, and my friend's mom said that if they get into another fight again their going to have to move to a diffenet school.Well it's not rellay me how connect to this part of the story it's my friend's and because tthei mom is going to make them move if they get into another fight again. And Josephine parent's made her move to a differnet school and church all because she got into a fight.
2)You can tell this story is a historical fiction because the way Josephine act's like in this story. She act's so mean to color peopel like when she saw mrs. Abilene she was like i don't want a negro cleaning my house.

  18. In response to Emily P. Great connection to the mean 4th grade teacher. (I remember her!)I thought you did a great job of giving reasons why this unnamed teacher was similar to the lady Huck lives with. I think the way you also related the children who JUST WANTED TO GO TO RECESS, to Huckleberry was intelligent in the way you made multiple comparisions at once. I got a great image in my head of Huck, and lady he lived with before even reading the book.

Julia, I have a connection to my uncle too. Whenever he comes down to visit or my family and we go up to visit him we always have so much fun. Because my uncle lives in the Poconos, when we visit him we usually go skiing and go out to places in the mountains with him.

    RESPONSE TO HALEY P.
Haley, A WALK IN DREAD seems like an interesting novel. Like you i have done things behind my parents back but they soon relize I have done what i should have not. Also my parents would not beat me just yell. I have heard of the Salem Witch Trials. Isaw it in a movie named HOCUS POCUS. Even though Deliverance is a fictional character i do wish her the best of luck.

  22. RESPONSE TO MEGAN JONES
Megan, although I have never read FEVER I thought you were very descriptive and you used great connections, sad connections, but good ones. I thought you used your Social Studies knowledge well in figuring out that Philidelphia used to be our nations capitol. I also understand how hard it is to lose someone you are close to I had a cat that i have had since I was 2 up until I was 6 and one day she just never showed up. My mom later told me that my Dad saw her in the street (dead) it was hard as was the lose of your great uncle I am sure.

  24. RESPONSE TO ALI M.
Ali I,have never read ASHES OF ROSES but based on what you were saying it reminds me of my family. We have four girls in the family that each do 3-5 sports each. As you can imagine, our weekends are never relaxing and on one of those "once in a blue moon" weekends were I dont have anything, I always protest with my mom to let me not go to my sisters games and let me sleep in!! This relates to your book because Rose protested with her mom to stay in America, like I would to stay home.

  25. RESPONSE TO HALEY PRILLAMAN.
Haley, I have never read WLAK IN DREAD, but Ican also relate to her by the things I have done behind my parents back too. Although I think my parents spanked my once but the rest i just got grounded. Then I also know some teachers that are really strict and excpect you to do evry thing the right way so I know how Deliverence feels.

  26. I am reading CLEOPATRA VII DAUGHTER OF THE NILE (EGYPT, 57 B.C.)
    1. i cant compare anything that ive done to anything theyve done. well thats probably because royalty backthen was like a big crazy contest. almost like the Hunger Games. one will make it into their own country's royalty line.back then you were lucky if you lived to marry into another royalty line. there was one passage that stated when cleopatra went to go pick up her older sisters pearl necklace off the floor after being thrown, her sister pulled out a dagger from her dress and held it to cleopatra's throat until she gave back the necklace and left. Home is a battlfield when everyday you just pray that you will stand to see tomorrow.
    2. i knew that my boook was going to be historical fiction because within the title ther were many hints. cloepatra is an important historical figure in ancient egyption history and clearly within the title states the year the story is being told in and the setting. (above also)
