Tuesday, April 12- Fantasy

Answer BOTH of the following questions:

1. The main character is moving to your town. Will he or she fit in? Why or why not? How are his or her values and tastes different from -or the same as- those of your hometown?

2. List some new clues that shows your book is fantasy.

  1. 1. My book is HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF ASKABAN.Harry is the main character, if he were to move here i think he would fit in just fine. I decided on this because Harry lives with muggles anyway.(People without magic abilitys) if he can resist using magic when he is out and about with the muggles then he certainly can in Dover,Delaware.
    2. some hints that tell me that my book is fantasy is that Harry Potter almost got killed by the Dark Lord who is a evil wizard. His parents were killed by him but the evil wizard decided not to kill harry with his powers and just gave him a scar. Harry Potter therefore has to live with muggles and he goes to Hogwarts witch craft and wizardry school. witches and wizards are not real and under the category fantasy.

1.In my book SWORD OF THE RIGHTFUL KING, the main character is Gawaine, but if another character in the book named Merlinus, who plays a big role in this book because he is trying to keep his lord, Arthur, as king instead of Gawaine, moves to our town, I would not think that he would fit in. For starters, when Merlinus was telling Arthur about his plan to keep him as King, he had a difficult time trying to explain it because he kept on correcting Arthur's pronuncation in latin. In this day in age, people at about Arthur's age( early 20's) would not even listen to Merlinus, which would be defiant in his perspective. Merlinus always wants people to just leave him as the old man he is. When he fell asleep outside once, people started to worry about him because they thought he was dead since he was silent. He created a small dispute between him and the young boy that woke him up because he thought that the boy was calling him old. Merlinus beleives and values respect, Christianity, truth, and magic. In our hometown, kids do not really respect adults like back then in Merlinus' time, but you could find Christians, and truth within people you could trust. There is no such thing as magic which could tick Merlinus off if anyone ever said that to him.
2.I know that this book is fantasy even if new elements were not presented in the story because Merlinus talks about him using magic to help Aurthur, and that he remembers Gawaine's mom as a child always playing with magic dolls and creating new spells.

  3. I am reading THE LIGHTNING THIEF by Rick Riordan. If Percy[main character] were to move to Dover, DE he not fit in very well because he is not just a typical middle-schooler. Percy is not a typical middle-schooler because he is a half-blood. A half-blood is someone who is half human and half god. Here in Dover I am pretty sure that there are no half-bloods. Another reason he wouldn't fit in is because he has Dyslexia and ADHD. He has Dyslexia because he is hardwired for ancient Greek and he has ADHD because is impulsive and can't sit still in the classroom. Students in Dover are used to reading English and are able to sit still in class. Percy values and tastes are different from those in Dover because to Percy anybody could be a monster trying to kill him. Here in Dover, that is the least of our worries. Another reason Percy is different is that he is being trained to kill monsters during quests. On the other hand, in Dover people get educated to be sucessful. If I were Percy I would not move to Dover, DE.

    2. I know that my book is fantasy because it talks about many Greek myths such as half-bloods, satyrs, nymphs, naiads, etc...It also said that Olympus was located on the Empire State Building's 600th floor. As far as I know, The Empire State Building is not that big. This obviously tells you that everything in the book is made up which means it is definetly fantasy.

  4. 1) My main character will fit in when he moves to Delaware. He will fit in because before he was whisked away to the Underland on accident. So, he will have to have a slight adjust ment because he lived in New York City ,so he'll have to go from busy to not so busy. His values are similar to mine because he babysits his sister a lot like I have to. Also, we are different because he runs track and I am a soccer and LAX player.

    2) Some new clues of my book being a fantasy is that all the animals here that are small are supersized down in the underland. Also, they don't get along so they are always having wars. But, to top it off every single animal can talk so I know without a dought that my book is fantasy.

  5. 1 The main character of my book EVERLOST by Neil Shusterman, is Aliie, she would not fit in to my town. I think this because she is an afterlight, and only other afterlightrs can see her. If people could see her, though, she would fit in, because she is a hard worker, and very determined. She would fit very well, because I think she was a good student before she died, so I think she would fit in with the educational standards if Postlethwait, also. This fits in with our values, because most people value intellgence, and dedication when doing things. The book shows very little of her tastes, but what we do find out is she doesn't like know-it-alls, like most people in our society.
2 Some clues that my book is fantasy is that the characters are children who are stuck in Everlost, and they are souls that light up. Also, they sink into the earth unless they are on a deadspot, and all of those things are not real, and very ficticious, so I think the book is fantasy.

  6. I think if Macey came to town, people would act totally normal around her.The only thing she is doing is writing a history paper and that isnt out of the ordinary.

Some more things that tells me the book is fantasy is that now Macey, Austin, and a few other friends were a target while painting in a church. During the fire that broke out Macey got her hair burned off. The suspect that burned the church actually burned 2 other churches and a temple.

  7. If Harry Potter comes into Dover, then He will not fit in because everyone here are Muggles and he be the only wizard at Dover.Harry's values are diffrent from us humans by we are
normal and Harry is magical with his spells.Plus, Harry is odd looking with his scare on his forehead and we dress and look normal.

I can tell if my book is fantasy is Harry's friend,Ron,saved Harry with a flying car.The only veichle that flys is a plane.Plus, to get to their train, they must walk through a wall.I dont think anyone can walk through a wall and not bump their head to it.

  8. I have just finished AUGUST, DIE SHE MUST, and my main character is Stella, I think that yes, Stella would fit in to our town because she's like small town girl.

2 the way i can tell that my book is a mystery is bythe cant find out who killed Mac, a camp counsler, and if it was her boyfriend goerge or some one else until Stella figures it out who it was...

  9. 1. The main character of my book TUCK EVERLASTING is Winnie. If she did move to my town i think she would fit it. Shes a normal person. Not really that special. Her taste is just regular. So i guess she would sit with like the regular people. then not really popular just normal smart people. Like idc if she would chill with me cause at my table were all pretty G. Acording to Larua its a "Barrel of Laughs" Because of all the things i say. Only laura would say something smart and werid like that...

2.Some clues that say my book is fantasy is that like the other characters in my book all drank for this magic water spring thing that made them live forever. Magic. Yeah Buddy fantasy right there.

  10. 1. I am reading ELDEST by Christopher Paolini. If the main character, Eragon moved to my home town he would not fit in because he comes from a time of the past with no tecgnology. He is surrounded by creatures like elves, dwarves and dragons and would not take well to daily life in the modern world
    2. clues that my book is fantasy are that there are dragons, elves and dwarves in my book which is a quality that other genres lack. The book is centered around use of magic and takes place in a made up land

  11. 1. I know the main characters would not fit in because 1 is a dragon and 1 is a brownie.

2.some more reasons this book is fiction is because it has a basilisk and a jinn (or genie as its better known), also, it talks about ancient humans making living things out of metal and magic. All of these tings are impossible.

  12. 1.Yes wilam from my book will fit in because of he wish that she made(she wished to be the most popural girl in school). Her taste is a little different from my home town becsause her school uniforms sound unfaninable but every thing else
    sounds ok.
2.Everyone in her school first ignord her but since she made he wish everyone loves her.

1.My main character's name is Jeffery Magee. He probably would fit in. He is white, but he lives on the East side of town with an African American family. Therefore, alot of people hate him.
2.Its defiinetly fantasy because Jefferey runs away to live with buffaloes at the zoo. You would probably die if you did this, by getting trampled or something.

  14. If the main characters in my book, DEEP WIZARDRY, moved to town, they wouldn't fit in. Kit and Nita wont fit in because they talk to animals and rocks. They also go under water and just float there without having to come back up to breathe. They can do all this because they came across a book that taught them how to be wizards. Additionally, they can heal creatures even if the injury is fatal by casting certain spells. All of these are clear signs that this book is fantasy because humans in real life can only talk to humans, and they can't cast spells or magically heal animals.

  15. yes and no.. yes becase there are many less forchanit people who live here they sometimes have it hard such as having to ask people for lunch money or fild trip expences ect. but he is very respectful to his parentsand grand parents never talks back acts very adult like and obayes everything and gets a small birth day gift and you dont here a peep from him and that also ties in with fitting in becase if i had gottin one peace of choclate for my birth day i would FLIP even though im not the averge kid.

some new clues that show this book is a fantasy is that there is a girl in the book who has been chewing the same peace of gum for 6 mounths maybe not fantisy but pretty far fetch

ps: this book that i am reading is not really showing that it is fantasy and its probibly not untel they get into the chocolate factory....compared to the movie

  16. 1 If the main character in my book is moving to my town she , Roise will not fit in.Roise will not get use to the technology that we have in my town because where Roise is from there is no such thing as a microwave or t.v. She will be astonished at the animals she sees in my town's enviorment because Roise lives in a place where mythical beasts roam the land. Roise's values and tastes will also cause her not to fit into my town. Roise is a princess , so she'll think and act like a princess, and this is not what we usually see very often in the US because America is a democratic society. Roise will most likely wear clothes such as big white gowns ,and will talk about things such as spells and dragons. This is what the people in my town are not use to seeing or hearing. She will be astonished at the infrastructure she sees because Roise sees people that either live in small old wood and straw house or big castles. Also the people who live in my town are smarter than Roise because Roise lives in a time when science and math were "primitive" . Roise and i both live in two very different enviorments and time , so we'll act and behave differently.

2 Some new clues that shows that my book is fantasy is that the author describes how Roise encounters with witches and dark magic. We all know that witches and dark majic are not real so its not realistic fiction ,but witches and dark magic are more of things that you would read in a fantasy.

  17. RESPONSE TO KUSH:

Kush I completely agree with you Percy Jackson would never fit in Dover,DE. I like when you mentioned that he is getting trained to fight monsters and possibly kill them. Also, the way you mentioned that hes has ADHD is kind of cool, but what happens when he has to stalk the monster and stay still, does he get killed or does he kill the monster.

  18. RESPONSE TO OSAMA:
Osama, I absolutely agree that Roise would not fit in with the people of Dover, DE. The fact that she comes from a different time period is probably the biggest reason why. She probably was raised much more differently than people in DE were. But I do think that she could adjust to the technology we have today because everything in our daily life involves the use of technology. Think of it as playing a sport, at first you may not be good but over time you will get better because you practice that certain sport everyday.

  20. RESPONSE TO SEBASTION:
Sebastion, I agree with you all the way about Harry Potter coming to Dover and not fitting in. But on the other hand it would be pretty cool if he did though. I bet he would be the coolest person around, where do you think he would fly his broomstick?

I think your right about Eragon would not fit in.It would probally take him or her a while to get use to humans and pets. Also,we dont have anything fantasy here like elfs or Dragons. He or she will be like Harry Potter wandering about Earth.
