Thursday- 4/7 Historical Fiction

1. You board a train and discover you have the choice of sitting next to the main character or another character in the book. With whom would you choose to talk? Why? What would you like to ask the character? What would you tell him or her? (Remember, you do not need to choose the most admirable character.)

2. Please respond to a fellow classmate's ideas about their book and text connections.

  1. Of all of the characters in the book HUNGER GAMES, I would choose to sit next to Cinna. Cinna's clever design and bedazzeling dress caused me to be in awe. I would ask him where his inspiration came from for the "Girl on Fire" dress and why he had "chosen" to be the designer for District 12, when most people steer clear of that district because of its coal mining background. I would tell Cinna that I thought he was a genius and was one of the main reasons Katniss got so many votes that night at the Opening Ceremony Interviews. I would also love to ask him to help me become a fashion designer , as that would be one of my dream jobs!

  2. 1) I would like to sit next to josephine. I would like to sit by her because she is a little bit like me, like she can be mean at time's like i can. I would like to ask her if she like Lucas or not because when she ran into him in the wood's she keep trying to talk to him each time he tryed to leave. I would tell her that she's kinda like me because we both can be mean to people at time's. Also i wouldn't want to wake up to someone i don't know. Like her maid mrs. Abilene you have to wake up to her and not both of your parent's.

Of all the characters in my book WANTED: A GIRL FOR THE HORSES I would sit next to Charlotte Because, She feels lonley and sad because of her mom not feeling supportive to her and she donesn't trust anyone. So If I sit next to her, I think I might cheer her up. I would say "How did your mom take care of you?"
And "How does your life depend on your stable job?" And tell her she is really good at handling horses. And also ask her If she can show me some new styles of riding horses. I think that will be neat!

  4. If i boarded a train, and out of all the characters in the book TOUCH WOOD, I would sit next to Maman. (That is what the main character calls her mother, she is French.)I would choose her because even though in most of the book after sending her children to safety, she is more of a thought, or a memory, to Renee (the main character), she still plays an important role, especially in the beginning. I would ask her why she chose to send her three daughter in hiding at a church-boarding school with nuns, even though they were Jewish, and obviously would be taught to be a Christian, and was the safety of her children was more important than their beliefs? I would also ask if she expected her three daughters to get baptised, and if she was okay with it, because it protected them from the Germans. One thing I would tell her is that I think that in a time of great struggle for Jews, she stayed very strong, and optimistic, unlike some people in terrible situations.

  5. I'm reading the book "NINE DAYS A QUEEN by Ann Rinaldi. If I aboarded a train and found out I had to sit next to one of the characters in my book I would choose to sit next to Jane Grey. I choose her because she likes to have fun just like me. But I also choose her because I would want to learn more about her life. Like I would want to know more about why her mother abused her or how it felt to be the grand daughter or daughter or all those royal people that she was related to,(like if she liked it or not).

The character i would choose from the book WEETAMOO HEART OF THE POCASSETS is Weetamoo. Weetamoo seems like a loyal daughter and sister. Weetamoo try's to live up to her parents expectations but fails at time like every other kid. I would ask her what it's like to be the nation leader daughter?, and does she ever get juged? I'd tell her I love the fact that she stands up for herself. An example being two boys she knew challenged her to a bow and arrow contest and she was confident she would win, which she did. I would also tell her to keep drawing because in the book she draws many pictures to remeber certain times in her life.

  8. Of all of the characters in Huckleberry Finn, I would choose to sit next to Huck himself. I would love to hear about his fabulous adventure through the woods with his mischievous best friend Tom Sawyer. I would ask him about his father, and how in the world he was able to survive with a father who was always drunk and abusive. Huck could teach me many things about bravery, because he has to be brave and strong for the fact that he basically raises himself. I would love hearing and day-dreaming about the wild adventures Huck has been on through-out his life.

  9. The character i would choose to sit next to in the train would be Matilda. Her determination inspires me to keep going on just like she did in her time of challenge. I would ask her how she makes out helping her mother run a coffee shop alone and also grieving with the loss of her friend Polly. The fever spreading throughout the town so rapidly I would ask her if she was ever worried about not being able to stop the disease from entering her body. Matilda is a great example of perservering and that is just what I would like to do throughout my everyday life.

  10. If i had to choose someone in my book to sit next to I would probably choose Pie'Quan (Hauyou's Mother). I would choose her because she was as strong as she could be during her hard loss in order to keep taking care of Hauyou. I would ask her how she really felt about such a sudden and unprepared death by her husband, and if it was hard to keep her feelings all bottled up. I would tell her hat I admire her because I can tell I wouldnt be able to do all she is doing. I would also tell her that she can do it and that she shouldn't let all those obnoxious boatmen get to her and that she can take care of her and her family all by herself.

  11. From all the characters in THE LEGEND OF BUDDY BUSH I would want to sit next to Pattie Mae. I would because she has gone through a lot like her grandpa is sick and she is worried about him. Also she wanted to go to the doctor with him but she couldn't because her mom wouldn't let her. Also he wants to go north with her brother and sister because she hates the house that she is living in. But there has been some good things like her sister sends her a letter every Thursday and she got one and says that she is getting her own apartment and that her brother is getting married. Some questions I would like to ask is how does it feel to here that your sister is getting her own apartment and your brother getting married? Also how do you feel with your uncle in town living near you? Also if you have a $10,000 what would you do with it?

  12. In my book RADICAL RED by James Duffy, if I boarded a train and I had to sit next to one of the characters in my book it would be Conner. I would choose her because she is the type of person who is quiet inside but has a very strong opion. What I would ask Conner would be "Do you like your name and if you could change it what would it be changed to?". Also "Do you believe that women have just as much right to vote as mem?". I would tell Conner stand up for what you believe in and never back down from a challenge you might face, be strong and make the future generations of women proud.

  13. Out of all the characters in NUMBER THE STARS I would choose to sit next to Peter. Peter is the main characters sisters fiance'. I would sit next to him because his fiance (annemaries sister)had died 2 weeks before their wedding and I would want to ask him how he was feeling? And if he will ever marry someone else? I would tell him that because he is so sad it makes annemarie sad and she is also sad because you rarely come over and hang out with her like you used to before Lise died...

  14. I am reading CLEOPATRA IV PRINCESS OF THE NILE. I the book so far i know the most abou thow she feels about her family and becoming pharoh.
I were to meet Cleopatra on the subway I would ask her that why if she knew what it was like for her father that he was part of an attempted murder everyday and that he spent most of his time in hiding then why would she want so badly to take that place. Why wouldnt she just stay as the beloved spoiled princess. I would have personally been too INTIMIDATED to have 3/4 of my people want me dead and some actually acting on it.
I would tell her that it wouldnt be worth it to become ruler to lead up to spending half your life in hiding. If you still have to kill all your siblings(including the ones who did care about you)then is the result enough to make up for it. Being pharoh in that time made you a target most of the time so if fortune is all that your fighting for than you'll sure look pretty when your lying lonely in your deathbed.

  15. If i was abord a train with all the characters in I WALK IN DREAD, I would choose to sit next to Deliverance. Deliverance has a constant characteristic that shows bravery and respect. She always thinks twice about her decisions which is hard for some people like her sister. Also she stands up for whats right and always does it in a christian way. I wish I could be more like Deliverance and always keep myself cool and calm when my mind and body want to act. I want to know how she keeps her self so calm and ask her how and why she is constantly portraying such an innocent character. Will part of the climax be her loosing her cool and flipping???

  17. Im reading A GREAT AND TERRRIBLE BEAUTY by Libba Bray. If I boarded a train and found out I get to sit next to one of the characters I would sit next to Gemma, because I would like to hear what her point of view is on how women are treated in the 19th Century. I think it would be very fasinanting to find out a little more about the boarding school she is attending. Iwould ask her if she enjoys wearing a corset ? I would tell her to be wary of some people..
